Cognitive deficits in a number of areas. Impaired in these seven areas: language, reasoning, attention, memory, reading, writing, number skills. Interpersonal communication: social judgement, making and retaining friends. Tested on this by a psychologist: self management and independence. How are they diagnosed: psychologist, cognitive test, wisc v, wppsi, need to also fall into extremely low category for adaptive behaviours. If the score is less than 70 they will look into diagnosis. Sensory tool not sensory toy: every child gets what they need to be successful. Process of breaking down skills into smaller more reasonable activities. Identify desired outcome and use words or images to show steps. Important part of teaching life skills and other important skills. Many children with a mild intellectual disability are not identified until they go to school because: most are mildly disabled. Increase of the demands made on the student (both educational & adaptive)
