Indigenous Australians overview
- in 2016; 744,956 Indigenous people living in Australia
- 3.0% of the Australian population
- nearly 35% of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people live in NSW
- Australian population is approximately 24 million
‘Aboriginal health’ means not just the physical well-being of an individual but refers to
the social, emotional and cultural well-being of the whole community in which each
individual is able to achieve their full potential as a human being thereby bringing about
the total well-being of their community
if we recognise that Aboriginal health has its own definition and requires a different
approach, we need to understand how to work within the context of the Aboriginal health
definition
for instance, we recognise that paediatric, adult and geriatric health is approached in a
different way, we need to learn about the issues that impact on Aboriginal health and be
mindful of the differences in Aboriginal health
Determinants of health
Essentially there are three key determinants of health:
- biomedical risk factors
- behavioural risk factors and
- social determinants
What are the social determinants of health?
The World Health Organisation (WHO), defines social determinants of health as, the
conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work and age.
These conditions shape our lives, and ultimately impact on our health and well-being
Indigenous people are generally worse off than non-Indigenous people when it comes
to the social determinants of health
Contemporary issues impact on the health and well-being of Indigenous people and
contributes to the decreased life expectancy and reduces quality of life
As health professionals, we must understand that many of the factors resulting in poor
health outcomes for Indigenous people, have a social basis as the origin, rather than a
specific physical disease
The causes of social determinants of health:
- Dispossession
- Subjugating government historical and socio-political events
- Institutional discrimination
- Denial of culture and identity
- Lack of citizenship
- Human rights atrocities and violations
- Child loss and abuse in care
- Overt and covert racism
- Racist propaganda
- Failure to manage health needs in a holistic way
- Social exclusion
- Starved, murdered, imprisoned
- Inaccurate and distorted narrative about history
