How to Write a Successful Major Essay
- Read question
- Read criteria carefully
- Read essay writing guide closely
- Read referencing guide
Hamed: A clear convincing answer throughout the essay = coherently/logically
structured, clearly written & appropriately referenced set of convincing arguments
backed up by adequate amount of relevant evidence
Structure
• Title – short, general, relevant, clear
• Introduction – write at the end, should grasp attention, shape expectations of
reader
o Insightful, aims of essay, subject, problem/question decoded
o Second part outlines structure, how essay will answer it, what is going to
be proved/shown/displayed
• Body
o Set of coherently related arguments, logical, easy to follow
o Include subheadings
o Do not wander between periods, countries, cases
o Include literature review around the subject
o Move paragraphs around, add bridging sentences
• Conclusion – stand
Argument
• Not too many definitions
• Be clear when moving between historical periods, countries, or cases
• Check date of resources
• Include relevance to the subject/question
• Position must be clearly developed and distinguished from other authors
• No unsupported assertions
• Adequate evidence
o Citing author’s opinion is not always evidence unless this is the subject of
the discussion
