Week 4 - Sports and exercise psychology (SEP)
What is sports and exercise psychology?
The scientific study of people and their behaviors in sports settings and practically applying
that knowledge.
- Training the way athletes think and respond to situations while engaging in their sport
- Assisting them to cope and to deal with personal issues that might impact their
performance in life and sport
- Upakig people’s haits or ehaioural patters to assister the to e ore self-aware
and/or, sometimes, to make a change in a way that fits with their goals.
Mental = mind

- Training the way individuals think and respond to situations while playing their sport or
while exercising
Two main objectives of SEP
1. To understand the effects of psychological factors on sports and exercise performance
e.g. ho does aiet affet a golfer’s puttig aura? Does lak self-confidence influence
a athlete’s ailit to perfor
2. To understand the effects of sports and exercise involvements on psychological and
emotional factors
e.g. does running reduce anxiety and depression? Does participating in sport impact upon a
hild’s self-esteem?
What do SEP do?
- Work with both individuals and teams
- Use psychological assessment techniques to both monitor and provide feedback
- Develop performance enhancement programs
- Help athletes to mentally prepare for their sport
- Provide clinical counselling services where required (e.g. depression, stress, disordered
eater, etc.)
- Provide consultative program development services for coaches, trainers, and others that
work directly with athletes
Two essential ingredients
1. Effective communication skills – being able to develop a good rapport with someone (e.g.
relationship of trust)
- Among the most important ingredients contributing to the performance enhancement and
personal growth of sport and exercise participants
- Empathy – ability to understand and share feelings of another (and your willingness to do
this)
