COR109 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Stretching, Scientific Method, Deductive Reasoning
Lecture 2
"a systematic process of discovery and advanced of human knowledge".
Objectivity Is important as it informs the scientific method
Subjectivity is based on how it looks. Boxing, diving,gymnastsics- no ones measuring if the
'punch' connected or how high the gymnasium jumped off the ground. Its all about how It
looks. Objectivity is based on time, running, swimming, cycling ect to get the winner it is
based on time/measurements.
Evolution of research
Custom & tradition - Research is not necessarily right. Not always based on facts
Authority- people tend to believe the king/queen/primister etc.
Deductive reasoning- general assumption etc. "all blue eyed people drive red cars. John
drives a red cra. Therefore john has blue eyes.
Scientific enquiry-proceed from specific to general. Sample size is important
What are some tradition or customary approaches in sport/ or exercise science that
influence our thinking and behaviours including:
Static stretching before exercise
Ill train someone how I was trained
Concussions in rugby league
The scientific method
What do you want to answer?
What's the research question?
E.g.. Does listening to relaxing music prior to an event enhance marathon running
performance?
Statement of hypothesis
A belief, hunch, or prediction of the outcome of the research, often based upon previous
research.
Preditio of hat e thik is goig to our. "the ai of the researh as…… I predit….
E.g.. Listening to relaxing music prior to a competition will enhance marathon running
performance.
Research design
How will the research be structured in order to collect data needed to answer the research
question?
e.g.. pPretest- intervention- post test
Data collection and analysis
Measuring, observing, interviewing, coding, counting ect
E.g.. Measure race time before and after listening to relaxing music
Confirm or reject hypothesis
