Consists of peripheral and central nervous systems. Brain (command centre) located above the spinal cord in the midline of the body. Has 2 hemispheres medial aspect is flat, lateral is curved. Two hemispheres are connected by a white tissue corpus callosum. Brain connected to the spinal cord by the medulla (end portion of brain stem) Sensory information goes to the back of the spinal cord. > efferent information comes out the front of the spinal cord. Within the middle of the spinal cord is grey matter contains nuclei. All other matter is called white matter. White matter: white due to presence of myelin. Contains columns/tracts which ascend/descend (ventral, dorsal, lateral) Fibres > pathways/tracts > columns > white matter. Myelin: produced by oligodendrocytes or schwann cells from the pns. In the middle of the spinal cord is a central canal which is filled with cerebrospinal fluid (csf) Clear fluid, similar structure to blood plasma (derived from blood)
