HPSC1000 Lecture 17: Lecture 17
Lecture 17
Can we define impairment?
- The medical model requires an objective understanding of biological function (as with
disease) that goes wrong in pathological cases
You can still be happy, but it is possible to specify the function pf the component
parts of the human being just as it is possible to specify the component parts of a
computer etc. and sometimes these parts can go wrong, and this is called
disease or disability
- Soe theorists sa this at e doe, for a iale aoralit is opatile ith a
functional outcome
Slipjer’s goat
- Biologist E.J Slipjer studied a goat born without forelegs
- It also had an S-shaped spin, a misshaped thorax, and many other abnormal bones and
muscles
- If we look at it as a collection of subsystems we see nothing but problems
- Hoeer, Slipjers goat leart to alk o it ak legs. Cosidered as a total sste trig
to surie ad reprodue the goat didt do too adl
Naturalists (social model)
- This is still pathology, just compensated for. Physiology or evolution can specify function
objectively
- Can overcome obstacles
- Figure out the set of values and problems that cause us to think a person is disabled
compared to differed
What is the effect of the impairment?
- Even if disabilities arise from impairment they can be made worse by the physical and
social environment and cause unjustified discrimination
- Proper response? If surgery or therapy will reduce the harm, should we do it, or are we
going along with bad norms / showing a lack of respect?
