Leture 1- intro to eauty
1. Is Beauty subjective (related to only me or my specific tastes) of objective
(something that all human beings can agree on)?
2. Is beauty universal (crossing cultural boundaries) or is it culturally
relative?
3. Can beauty impart knowledge to us that evades reason? Or does beauty
work alongside reason? Or is beauty simply about our emotions and has
nothing to do with either knowledge/truth or reason?
4. Is art beautiful? If not, what is art?
5. What is the relation between aesthetic value (beauty) and moral value
(goodness)? Can a beautiful work of art be morally evil?
According to Plate
• Artists are not concern with the truth but they are concerned with the
appearances
• 2 degrees away from truth
• There is truth and aesthetics
Beauty gives you emotions and corrupts you. Plato thought this was dangerous;
to be too emotional
Aristotle:
• You experience the fear and pity for someone else
• The notion of fear and pity, you see yourself your own existential reality
• Way of accepting your own fate
• Emotional life is below the rational life
Love and desire is an essential aspect of Beauty
Diotima of Mantinea:
• Wiser than Socrates
• Eros is not a great god, because gods are beautiful and good.
• Why did Diotima say this?
• Is the son of god of resourcefulness and want
• Eros is very poor being far from beautiful
• Eros is resourceful, he plots for good and beautiful things because he is
courageous, eager and intense
• Desire lives between completeness ignorance and desire/ wisdom
Eros is a philosopher
• To love wisdom is on the one hand to not have it, but also to know what it
is and to desire it
