Term Definition
Roles Positions in society having expected responsibilities and privileges
Set of behaviours (socially agreed upon/social norms)
Role identification (we see ourselves as a mother, student, parent,
etc)
Dynamic and change overtime
Roles are embedded into our sociocultural lifestyles
Roles are learned through a process of socialisation - recognised by
society
Hierarchy of roles
Occupations Client-directed daily life activities that match and support or address
identified participation goals.
A broad term that encompasses and builds upon tasks and activities
Activities Actions designed and selected to support the development of performance
skills and performance patterns to enhance occupational engagement.
Activities often are components of occupations and always hold meaning,
relevance, and perceived utility for clients at their level of interest and
motivation.
Often used interchangeably
(Tasks are the basics units that make up an activity)
A set of purposeful actions/behaviours that contribute to the overall
performance of the occupation
Needs to be supported by persons skills and abilities
Actions Observable behaviours that are recognisable
Contribute to the activity
Contribute to doing the occupation
Habits - specific automatic behaviours that are repeated by a person
Little variation (consistent) in the way that habits are performed
Can be altered in different environments
Can be healthy/unhealthy
