ANHB1102 Lecture 3: Somatic Motor Control
Document Summary
Skeletal muscle only contracts if stimulated to do so (excitable) Repetitive hip and shoulder movements in walking. Originates in premotor association area of frontal lobes (planning) Modi ed and coordinated by basal nuclei + cerebellum. Transmitted to primary motor area in pre central gyrus. Conscious (somatic motor) control of skeletal muscle, commands from primary motor cortex. Lateral = decussation in medulla. bypasses the thalamus. Anterior = decussation lower in spinal cord. Upper motor neuron - originates in cerebral cortex/brainstem and terminals on a lower motor neurone (all in cns) Lower motor neuron - soma in brainstem or spinal cord with axon to a muscle or other target organ in the pns. The motor unit = motor neuron and all the muscle bres that it innervates. Acetylcholine at synaptic transmission (to sarcolemma receptors on muscle cell). Info is then spread throughout the muscle to other regions by specialised tubules. Sends info about position and length of muscle.
