LECTURE SEVEN: Blood Supply & Venous Drainage of Head and
Neck
Carotid System:
Major input to head, neck and brain
Common carotid artery runs halfway up neck
Splits into internal carotid (2/3) and external carotid (1/3) arteries
Internal Carotid:
Enters cranial cavity via carotid canal
Runs anteriorly to reach foramen lacerum doesn’t run through
Loops around either side of pituitary fossa
Carotid sinus swelling for monitoring blood pressure, CO2 and O2
concentrations
Main branches
o Anterior and middle cerebral arteries
o MCA supplies most of the external cerebral cortex most
important branch of ICA
o ACA sends branches to the medial part of the hemispheres
anastomosis between 2 ACAs
o Striate to basal ganglia and internal capsule
o Branches enter through the perforated substance regions
branches to choroid plexuses enter here
Vertebral Artery System:
In the neck from vertebral artery
Run in the transverse foramina of vertebrae
Enter cranium through foramen magnum
2 vertebral arteries unite to form the basilar artery
Supplies
o Spinal cord
o Cerebellum
o Brain stem
o Posterior cerebrum
Main branch posterior cerebral artery posterior cerebrum supply
Anastomoses with the ICA in the circle of Willis via communicating
arteries (CAs)
External Carotid:
Supplies mostly external structures
o Scalp
o Face
o Jaws/teeth
o Meninges
