Individual to social explanations of offending - nurture factors. Assesses risk factors to understand chronic persistent offenders - most offend before 25yrs and then it drops off, but these offenders do not follow this pattern (continue in + out of justice system throughout life). Correlational research - trying to establish antecedents to explain high offending frequency. Farrington: identi ed risk factors of poor concentration, impulsivity, poor parental supervision, exposure to child abuse, low intelligence, parental con ict, opportunity, low income, poor housing - some consistency w other theories we have examined. More factors = greater likelihood of being life course persistent offender. 9+ factors = almost de nitely will become a violent offender in the community (correlational) Strong link between those who are offenders and who are/become victims. Homicide - 50% of victims and 57% of offenders had prior arrests. Violence - 5% of offenders were not victims (95% had been victims before).
