LECTURE 14B
PHONOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF ALLOMORPHY 2
-Review: testing generality
In developing a phonological analysis of segmental alternation
Ex/ the /r/ ~ /ɻ / in the Arrernte example
-The phonological processes we propose in the competing analyses should be as general as
possible, in the sense that:
The rule(s) should be as consistent as possible with all the known words in the language
-i.e. Not just a ‘special’ rule for one particular segmental alternation in just one morpheme
There are two sides to generality we can check for
For example, the rule in analysis 2 of the Arrernte alternation
-The effect of this rule is to change a sequence like /peɻ/ to /per/
-If it’s a general rule, it would apply to all words in the language
So we ask, are there any words where the rule would result in the wrong form?
-Yes, many words including /apəɻ / ‘river red gum’.
-The rule can’t be general, otherwise this would be */apər/
Generality also means we favour an analysis that explains a particular alternation in terms of the
general patterns of sounds that are permitted or preferred in the words of the language in general
-For example, the rule in analysis 1 of Arrernte alternation
/r/ /ɻ/ / /rə/ _
The effect of this rule is to avoid the sequence /rər/
-So we ask, does the language in general avoid this sequence?
So we look to see if there any words or individual morphemes in the language with the
sequence /rər/
The sequence does not occur in other words in Arrernte
-Example: Mõõré

-Allomorphy in some noun root morphemes
Summary of morphology
Analysing morphology as segmental alternation
-Some root morphemes show allomorphy
-In each case, the two allomorphs look phonologically relatable, so we undertake a phonological
analysis
Matching up the corresponding segments in each case:
-We can see the same pattern in each case, so we can make the working assumption that a single
process is responsible
-We therefore recognise a single segmental alternation: /m/ ~ /n/
Competing analyses of /n/ ~ /m/
-Given the two-way alternation between /n/ and /m/, there are two obvious competing analyses:

In each case, the two allomorphs look phonologically relatable, so we undertake a phonological analysis: matching up the corresponding segments in each case: We can see the same pattern in each case, so we can make the working assumption that a single process is responsible. We therefore recognise a single segmental alternation: /m/ ~ /n: competing analyses of /n/ ~ /m/
