community!
- population as whole has more people who
are overweight/obese than acceptable weight !

-Smaller proportion of normal weight !
-as the years go by, high proportion of obesity/overweight (trend is similar in USA and australia)!
-Prevalence of obesity increasing!
Half tonne man: !
-500kg+!
-Lost about 200kg!
-Died due to complications!
How is it possible to see such high rates of obesity? ENERGY BALANCE!
-physical activity not the only way to expend
energy (digestion of food and metabolism also),
but physical activity only one with conscious
control!
-losing weight: requires energy imbalance: EE > EI!

-eat too much = gain weight!
-Not exercising enough = gain weight!
= generally: we are doing less PA compared to
the past (because of labour saving devices)!
-eating more than the past? Maybe!
Biology: !
-genetically prone to overeating/sedentary!
-Even if genetically prone to overeating = has
conscious eort to eat = genetics loads the
gun but lifestyle pulls the trigger (choices you make that matter)!
Early life:!
-in mother’s womb especially = can increase risk of overweight if mother doesn’t take care of
what she’s eating when pregnant!
Disorder:!
-can increase weight by 5-8kg but shouldn’t be making them overweight/obesity!
-They have to work other to watch what they eat/PA!
Environment:!
-tend to drive a lot based on how city set up!
-Medications people are on these days (side eects: weight gain) - but shouldn’t make you
overweight/obese, just need to work harder!
-Smoker: eat instead of smoke to fulfil the need!
Despite all these factors: it is their conscious eort: eating and PA!
2 components:!
1.Less time of PA!
-more sedentary time !
-Labour saving technologies!

-risk of being obese!
-People who are more PA, lower risk of obesity!
-Green dot: watch most TV!
-even if you exercise a lot, but you also sedentary,
risk of obesity still higher than if you spend less
time being sedentary !

Weight loss achieved: massive impact on those health risk and overall risk of mortality!
-weight loss = decrease mortality!
-BUT must be permanent: fluctuating weight may increase risk!
= to lose weight: EI from food and drink < EE through PA
and metabolism!

- if do everyday: >3kg weight gain in a year!
