PHIL 1113 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Peace And Conflict Studies, Cultural Relativism, Schizophrenia
Document Summary
Critical reflection should be applied to the best-sounding concepts. Our generation isn"t ready to accept that you can break the status quo. This gives rise to the powerful and relentless force. New forms of government were created because the previous generations weren"t happy with the political system - democracy, communism, capitalism, etc. Corporate propaganda through the media makes us live in a weird schizophrenic world where we accept ads and posters are put up every 8 minutes on tv. Products are now sold with a psychological appeal of a lifestyle rather than of a direct relation to the product. We now live in an immediate consumption world where even art is used and appreciated for the present and then thrown away after use. Mass culture looks at the present and most times covers up the past. Most regions cover up crucial historical facts in order to gain more psychological power over the public.
