The purpose of the dsm is to aid in communication. It helps give a prognosis (lays out expectations). The first one came out in 1952. In 1980 the third one came out and it was a-theoretic. The dsms prior to the fifth were based on five axes. There were clinical disorders, personality disorders, physical disorders, dimensional rating of the disorders (context), and adaptive functioning. The dsm-5: struck up a task force (some made up of doctors). Working groups found issues and then performed field tests. It was signed by 14, 000 health care professionals. It cost 20-24 million dollars to create it. Dsm-5 tried to be more in line with the icd. They also tried to improve on the dimensional approach. Trauma doesn"t ha(cid:448)e a specific course of psychotropic treatment. A lot of people who helped create the dsm-5 were part of big pharma. This is controversial because big pharma influenced the dsm a lot.
