PSYC 2143 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Fusiform Face Area, Temporal Lobe, Two-Streams Hypothesis
Document Summary
Bayesian inference: a way of explaining how we learn. As (cid:455)ou e(cid:454)perie(cid:374)(cid:272)e (cid:373)ore a(cid:374)d (cid:373)ore thi(cid:374)gs (cid:455)ou"re changing the way you think about it. Region: fusiform face area- specializes in face recognition. Researchers wanted to know if experiencing new things would influence the brain. Researchers created creatures called greebles, and had participants look at them. The gree(cid:271)les did(cid:374)"t (cid:272)ause the ffa (cid:894)fusifor(cid:373) fa(cid:272)e area(cid:895) to become active. People had to identify which family the different greebles belonged to. After a few hours of practice, they were able to successfully sort greebles into their correct families. When the experimenters had the participants look at the greebles again, the ffa was actually highly active. This shows that experience can shape our brains. Another experience: kittens raised in the dark. Once or twice a day they were put in a room with stripes on the walls. The question was: will what the kittens grew up seeing influence their perception.
