DAT-3000 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Dung Beetle
Document Summary
Generally characterised by their hard shells, beetles can be found in many habitats and have a variety of purpose. New species are discovered frequently and the diversity of their traits is outstanding. That s not surprising considering they go through complete metamorphosis, modifying their body structure. As unsightly as they are, humans have a unique relationship with beetles. Most beetles live off plant, wood and fungi matter. Because many of these plants are important to us, beetles are frequently considered pests. Like many other pests, beetles can become resistant to pesticides as well. Which is bad news not only to agriculture, but also to those with old wooden structures. It can be one of the most destructive pests canadian pine forests. They truly do have something to offer in return. The insect is commonly used for human consumption around the world, mealworms being most common.
