BIOL 235 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Canadian Policy Research Networks, Intersection Theory, Intersectionality
Document Summary
Intersectionality: the idea that one needs to examine how various biological, cultural and social categories interact on multiple (and often simultaneous) levels that lead to oppression and inequality. origins of intersectional theory: Emphasized that there is a simultaneous production of gender and race. Argued against a global category of women and a common experience of womanhood. Need to move beyond points on dichotomy (white/black, male/female) and imagine ourselves as existing at intersections of multiple identities: physical activity for marginalized women in bc (an intersectional study) Women in marginalized groups tend to experience health issues that could benefit from physical activity (ie. cardiovascular disease, diabetes and depression) Women who are racialized, disabled, elderly, mothering, rural-dwelling, living on low income, or combination therefore report lowest rates of physical activity. The women who could most benefit from physical activity are the least likely to be active! Physical activity seen as part of healthy lifestyle.
