Document Summary
Week 12 influence of others 1 and 2. Norman triplett: conducted systematic studies to demonstrate that people behave differently in the presence of others. Triplett observed that cyclists raced faster when competing against each other in a group, compared to when racing against the clock on an individual time trial. Interestingly, such competitive effects can be even observed in children when performing a task in which there is no explicit reward for competition. In another study: triplett ask a child to perform the simple task of winding a string on a fishing rod as fast as he could either alone or in groups. Triplett noted that children would wind the fishing rod faster when other children were present compared to when they did the task alone. Tiplett"s fi(cid:374)di(cid:374)gs: the mere presence of others was an important variable in the performance of the actor. Co-actor - another individual performing the same task.
