Document Summary

Speech is just a pattern of sounds and symbols put together that stand for something else. This is something that needs to be learned by infants. Perceptual narrowing: for language and faces. Effects of early and delayed experience: timing matters. Crying is how babies communicate that they need something. Parents become pretty good at learning their baby"s cry. Studies have shown that when mothers are stressed, their baby will have a higher heart rate. The relationship that develops between an infant and primary caregiver. That first attachment relationship sets up a lifelong working model of the world. This will effect one"s ability to form romantic relationships later on. The infant is not a passenger in this process. Distress can lead to despair which leads to detachment. One key ingredient is how responsive the parent is to the baby"s needs. The parent"s capacity to care for the infant will be influenced by outside sources.
