Document Summary

Trying to find lowest sound pressure that someone responds to. As soon as they reliable respond 50% of the time, that is their threshold. Threshold is the lowest decibel/volume level that they hear. Test a pure tone (single freq); use 250-8000hz. Even though we can hear more than that we are only interested in them hearing speech frequencies. Sounds are more intense and complex in real life; and occurring along other sounds. Door is solid and must close with air tight seal. Walls covered with soft materials to minimize reverberation. Easy to produce (standardized sound that will be the same for everyone); easy to calibrate (make adjustments and make things fit perfect to specifications) on the machines. Allows for testing of specific frequencies (no way to judge which frequency is problematic for them in a word without this) Allows audiologists to discuss potential impact on specific sounds. Takes lots of skill to perform these tasks.
