Marx: labour is waged employment that involves exploitation. Exploitation: extraction of surplus value from free labourers who sell labour power (capacity to wok) to capitalists (who own the means of production) in exchange for a wage. Surplus value: the extra value capitalists extract from labourer after paying their wage. Feminists sought to expand what is considered labour. We can think of relations as intimate to the extent that interactions within them depend on particularized knowledge received and attention provided by, at least. 1 person, knowledge and attention that are not widely available to 3rd parties (zelizer 2010) requires some vulnerability and knowledge that not all 3rd parties have access too. Attending to needs of individuals: bodily upkeep (care), attending to social needs, housecleaning, surgency (all involved bodily and emotional closeness) Includes: sex, domestic, care work, some service work. Based on brief encounters or durable relations (sperm donation)
