Machiavelli alone does not give you ontology of human nature; he is just concerned with observing the way things are. Writing in the 1600"s, he wrote a lot of ancient works and translated greek works into. English: very interested in greek thought. (huge upheaval in england due to protestant reformation at the time) Fundamental challenge to the divine right of kings at the time. Hobbes was a supporter of the monarchy but, he provided a fundamentally new ground in which to justify monarchy. Hobbes used fundamental equality, consent and, contract to justify the monarchy to the people. After getting his degree from oxford he was summoned by lord cavendish, forced to be a tutor for his eldest son that he connected with some of the great thinkers of the time; 2015fw poli 2p92 d3 sec 1: with thoughts of man are always representations of appearances; the first and most fundamental way of knowing anything is through our sense.
