SOCI 1F90 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Cultural Capital
Document Summary
What is culture, how do we think about culture culture and society same, different, or as sociologists say, it"s a part of society, but it isn"t society; there"s a link. Culture being main expressive component of humanity"s existence: language/speech = most frequent/main source of expression; also use art, music, clothing, gesture, behaviour. Functionalism: *never believe a functionalist bc theyre a bunch of rich white guys from 1950. See society as an organism (body =metaphor); brain, heart, feet all have job if people do job properly, the society runs smoothly; problems = poverty, stay at home women (not by choice) Culture reflects society, society reflects culture but this isn"t actually true! Family: it was giving us an idealized version of reality; weeds (lawyer one) was sensationalizing reality (where lawyer was giving ideas how to grow weed) Sees culture as a site for conflict; tool to dominate/gain power in society.
