SOCI 1F90 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Grounded Theory, Emma Watson, Ethnography
Document Summary
Goal: learn something about the social world. Determines cause/effect or probability: what researchers find in a pattern; might be a co-relation to two things. 4 tenets: a single objective truth can be discovered, right & wrong answers, numbers don"t lie (statistics don"t lie, research can be objective, unbiased. Process of deduction: develop a theory from other research, develop hypotheses, sample, design, collect data & conduct statistical analyses. Use the data to see if you are right with your hypothesis. Example: phyllis moen; mother"s well-being: quantitative sociologist, what causes well-being with mother"s reading functionalist literature, functionalist argued women that when they are mothers & work outside, they experience a lot of stress due to role-strain. Says too little about too much of social life: so much to know; about experiences, we cannot understand it all with statistics. Doesn"t reveal meaning: can"t get at what something really means, can"t get it on a survey; can"t put into numbers.
