ALDS 2203 Lecture 2: Structuralism & Behaviourism - Jan 11, 2016
Document Summary
Changes in theoretical frameworks (broad intro) (from parsing parts of speech to focusing on brain & then returning to interactionist theories) Then on to early structuralism (de saussure) Kuhn"s (1970) notion of paradigm summarized by breen (1987:83) as: Other words, paradigm = both particular unity of theory, research, & practice, and prevailing manner in which community of specialists construct theories, interpret research, & actually proceed w/ their work. Change only when sufficiently numerous pieces of counter-evidence accumulate to point where majority of proponents ( believers ) start shifting their stance or theoretical position. These changes don"t have to be dramatic but may be noticeable after fact. Other words: theoretical frameworks aren"t isolated boxes but rather like concentrations of colours which started out as subtle variations or changes in previous framework(s), i. e. , like colour changes in fish scales from head to tail. Paradigm shifts: changes along continuum in theoretical frameworks.
