ALDS 2203 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Verb, 2016 American League Division Series, Psycholinguistics
Document Summary
Psycholinguistics / sla teaching: language = complex, language isn"t gibberish; always ordered, language in use is always language in meaningful context. Psycholinguistics allows more insight into human responses & needs (stern, 1973: 16-18) Psycholinguistics attempts to explain how it"s that learners actually process their l2. Several theories offer diff perspectives: macwhinney & bates: competition model, mclaughlin: connectionist-type model, anderson: active control of thought (a. c. t. , piennemann (and clahsen) processability theory. Review of theories about sla & cognitive processes: Competition model (behaviourist basis: language competes for primary emphasis on stress, intonation, word order, etc. (e. g. english emphasizes word order; chinese emphasizes intonation) Competition model (macwhinney & bates (1982, 1989) based on lexical functionalism: assumes that lang. processing = interactive process of form-function mappings mediated by competition & cooperation among lexical items. Draws on connectionist modeling, thus stresses importance of frequency & info value of linguistic input.
