Political bodies that have the ability to use languages in specific orders. Linked to communication, social knowledge, power relations, and identities. A group of speakers can share a writing system. In the arctic there are currently nine different writing systems. Speech communities: groups of speakers that share language and meanings. Can be at different scales: local; urban; regional; national. All speech communities are also socially diverse and have variation in words, usage, and meanings. Unifying forces of language (at the inter-group level, constructing a common identity) And diversifying forces of language (construction of social distinction). The hierarchical ordering of languages and their speakers: the placing of speakers in higher or lower statuses and positions of power and authority.
