People wanted to overthrow the monarchy, thus destroying much symbolism and many important monuments. This was a key event in the development of the concepts of conservaion. Era of pillage and destrucion (art, buildings, anything that represented the king, etc. ) Building materials and metals reused for other purposes (i. e producion of arms) Lost row of statues (erroneously taken for french kings) Used as warehouse to store food in 1794. Palaces broken into, with collecions vandalized or resold. Only southern transept and bell tower remain. 1801: napoleon and pius vii formal peace between state and church destrucion coninued into 1800s. Naion had responsibility for care and protecion of church and other possessions. Government commits preservaion to expert insituions: how and what should be preserved, systemaic classiicaion and ideniicaion of all heritage. Viewed tangible monuments as reminder of past glory. Major efort given to restoraion of rome.
