The sculptures were not fully aware of what a classical volute was, if you take a closer ook. The ornament is less accurately reproducing the curgoresque forms we see in spain, almost a folk art version of what we would associate with a colonial corgoresque. So, people are being shown using an architectural style they do not fully understand. Another architectural idea being shown to change when moved to a different spot. This church, for example, the colonial designers have simplified the baroque forms.
