Egyptian sculpture: permanence, tradition, little change artistic conventions remaining virtually unchanged for 3000 years. Greek sculpture: progress & naturalism in a comparatively shorter amount of time (900 years) There are no 21st century issues that haven"t already been addressed by the ancient greeks. One of the most important principles of greek art = organization & order. Order developed, to a certain degree, due to military needs. Fought together, shield against shield, helmet against helmet, and man against man. Phalanx: gave the greeks their decided advantage. Training of the body and mind of the soldier. Shows that art making conforms to strict norms & conventions. Use of abstract designs as well as mythology. Development from flat surface drawings to figures that appear to be three-dimensional. Achilles & ajax playing a game: 540-530 bce. Temple of hera i, poseidona (roman paestum: 470-460 bce. Temple builders created a standardized plans for temples. Dedicated to hera, wife of zeus & queen of the gods.
