Incorporates elements of french gothic (gables with classical columns, inclusion of sculptures and elaborate portals) As you enter the church you are surrounded by elaborate art. Extensive use of frescoes on fa ade and inside. Christ with closed eyes and bleeding, slumped body emphasizing emoional realism. Virgin: almond-shaped face, elongated nose, large eyes. Drapery: incised lines that make no sense in terms of natural folds. Piazza della signoria with palazzo della signoria (town hall): 1299-1310; loggia of the lancers: Civic architecture in italy making sure people recognize who they are. Personal wealth is used to commission art works rather than royal patronage. Arnolfo di cambio, francesco taleni, andrea orcagna and others.
