We nished our discussion last time on the fact that the second empire style was something that reappears in the context of provincial legislative buildings, but in particular settings. Legislative buildings before were fragmented and they wanted to reform it. The buildings were to be of brick re ecting heritage of british parliaments. But he also believed that the gothic design was cheaper to execute than the classical design. It was decided they would hold an international competition. The architects who won the competition were a rm: Darling and curry (1880) legislative buildings for the province of ontario. The design took on a high victorian, gothic approach. At the end of the day, no tenders were called because the cost was a lot more than the threshold set by the government.
