Week 11, November 17 — Notes
SST — Supersonic transport
— Computer / internet development
SST development followed a clear trajectory
In the 1960s, it started with the first flight in the early 1900s. Stopped completely in 2003.
Computers and the internet started with transistor in 1950s, by the 1960s no immediate
predications of things like PCs or the internet even existed. Some prediction of cellphones
existed for the distant future, however.
By 2003, PC and internet both existed.
So, SSTs: cleaned the path of progress and stalled unexpectedly. The internet and computers,
however, had no path of progress and the exploded rapidly.
Impediment to computer and internet was removed by a legal decision. in the 60s and 70s 2
telephone companies controlled all telephone activity, one being AT&T.
This activity was regulated by the FCC. Early on the FCC supported a policy of no connection to
telephone equipment, either physics or by induction.
Examples from the 1950s — hush a phone decision:
Secretaries had to talk to clients and wanted privacy — someone built a plastic shield for
receivers. AT&T did not allow it, said “this is a connect to our telephone equipment”
Hush a phone issues went to the FCC and they decided that the device couldn't be used.
in the 1970s, Carter (a rancher in Texas) … was a big ranch, and they wanted to communicate
across it. They developed a radio transmission reception system which hooked up into the
phone lines.
AT&T again did not allow it. FCC did.
FCC allowed for the ranch to hook up his device to the phone line.
Carter’s decision was:
BC — Before Carterfone
AC — After Carterphone
How will technologies evolve in the future?
Kevin Warwick (a professor in England) says…
He wants to be a cyborg, an entity that is part human and part machine, because he is
embarrassed to be entirely natural/biological.
Cyborg discussions questioned the boundaries of being a cyborg
Warwick began entirely human, and after being modified, became less ‘normal’
On August of 1998, RFID transmitter implanted in his arm, it controlled lights, heat, and more…
in 2002, he had the “Brain Gate” and electrode array implanted. Controlled his robotic arm to
mimic his arm movements. He went to columbia university in NY city, connected to the internet,
and controlled a robotic aim in the UK.
