A Review: Artifacts as Interfaces
Artifacts as Interfaces — Environments involved.
— Inner environments and outer environments.
+ There should also be psycho-social environments.
Artworks: author creates the artifact to present to an art world public. That is a social-
phenomenon that the artwork is involved with.
To be an artifact depends on the authors intention to create an object of a certain kind.
Psychological phenomenon involved.
Chindogu — solves a problem illogically, making them useless, but not useless!…
What makes them useless is psychosocial… like a 20kg phone. Would stop people from using
phone too much (solves problem) too heavy (useless).

What are we attracted to? We have a fascination in anything done well…
Technology is tools and techniques. We find beauty in anything which is formed with great
technique. If we have artifacts with inner and outer elements, but we also must consider that the
way we think about artifacts and the way we appreciate them.
We discussed Simon on Technological Artifacts (IOP)
(1) Inner environment
(2) Outer environment
(3) Psycho-social environment
Now, Albert Borgmenn (Philosopher)
— responsible for something known as the Device Paradigm. He starts off by saying that we
(humans) dominate nature by using technology.
— We dominate nature by technology in order to yield things we want (liberation), free yourself
of burdens. A form of enrichment.
— He also discusses Goods:
- Goods that are available enrich our lives.
- Goods that are technologically available enrich our lives without
imposing burdens on us.
He is discussing what is technologically available. What does it mean?…
It means that if something is technologically available, it is:
• Instantaneous
• Ubiquitous
• Safe
• Easy
Consider the case of a heating cabin, in Montana, in the winter, in the mid 1800s.
