Leading up to the u. s. civil war 1861-65. Tension between two very different cultures - modern & pre-modern. Antebellum america - 1856 map of free and slave states . 4 key sources that sparked the civil war. Went past regular court to the supreme court. Was denied - anyone of african american dissent cannot be a citizen. John brown raid on harper"s ferry, virginia (1859) Brown decided that violent uprise was the only way to abolish slavery. Failed revolt - many died - including his son.
