BIOL 1004 Lecture Notes - Lecture 24: Red Squirrel, Lake Trout, Eastern Gray Squirrel
Document Summary
Introduce species: a species translocated by humans (deliberately or inadvertently) into an environment beyond its natural dispersal limits. Only a minority of introduced species become invasive but their impact is major. Estimated annual costs in damage and control in the us: 137 billion. In fresh water, you get lots of money in recreational fishing. So we want more fish and we introduce more fish. We got some lake trouts (open water fish) and likes to go to the shore, feeds off of smaller fish. Then you got the small mouthed bass, it"s also freshwater and very appreciated by recreational fisherman, likes shallow water, big predator more efficient than lake trout. People wanted to fish bass where there was none so they got moved. Where there was lake trout and bass were introduced, the lake trout were forced to feed away from the shore.
