BIOL 1902 Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Algonquin Provincial Park, Flesh Fly, Braconidae
Document Summary
Predation-3: drawbacks of being a predator, being injured during chase or prey fighting back. The host can be either killed or not: parasitoids kill their hosts, braconid wasps are parasitoids only in their larval stage, tachinid flies are parasitoids as larvae too, many flesh flies are parasitoids in the larval stage. They leave their eggs on leaves and caterpillars eat them accidentally: or the wasp will parasitize caterpillar, burry it on the ground and lay its eggs= thread-waisted wasp, spider wasps do this too, digger wasps do it too. Ichneumon wasps are a huge group of parasitoids: they are bigger, megarhyssa ichneumon ovipositors are impressive, they can also serve as drills. They push their ovipositor through the bark in a tree cuts in by either burning or slowly pushing. But the mantle looks like a small fish. Once a fish goes there it spouts out its eggs and as fish breathe in they breathe in the eggs too.
