Red bats: most birds migrate and travel tremendous distances, ex. World champion migration bird was arctic tern (20,000km roundtrip from south pole to africa). Champion is the red knot (a sandpiper) travelling. 26,700km round trip. , flying from artic to south america: fat powers the flight (body burning fat). Usually put fat on, under the skin, in the belly region. Red knot land in bay of fundy and double their weight in 10 days before continuing none stop to. Calmer, cooler, safer: some birds migrate in the day time and still conserve energy, ex. Hawks and eagles and vultures soar up on a thermal (column of rising air). They glide down to the next thermal and then soar up on it, and so on.
