BIOL 1902 Lecture Notes - Lecture 20: Salt And Pepper Shakers, Stamen, Caltha Palustris
Document Summary
Component 4: road to immortality cont"d: reproduction, asexual vs sexual, sexual cont"d. Males try to compete for paternity cont"d: other males use long copulations, ex. Handcuffs (claspers) keep walking sticks coupled for a day or two: many beetles use headless sperm (duds). Their physical mass prevents access to the female, creating a plug. These plugs are called copulatory plugs: ex. Featherwing beetles use giant sperm to plug the female up: mosquito ejaculate hardens making a cement plug. Some add anti-aphrodisiacs to the plug to make the female less appealing: male garter snakes also create a plug and secrete anti- aphrodisiacs, male honeybees have their body explode during sex. They die but their genitalia remains inside the female. Component 9: sexual stigmas & surrogate lovers: most flowers have both male and female parts making them hermaphrodites, flower sex organs, stamens (male) produce sperm, pistil (female) produces eggs. Sigma is the top part of the structure.
