Male bullfrogs have large tympanum bigger the body size, deeper the voice. Birds advertise w/ vocalizations: don"t have voice box, unique (no other animal has) way of making sound: use syrinx. Syrinx is why birds can sing 2 songs at 1 time: song has main 2 functions, advertising ownership of territory, advertising to attract mate, many warblers sing 2 diff songs: Female choice = major part of sexual selection & driving force in evolution. Some mammal use vocalizations or mate attraction: during rut, cow moose call to attract bull moose. Bulls vocalize & make non-vocal sounds by thrashing w/ their antlers. Advantages of using sound to attract mate: can do it w/o being seen, sound carries long distance. Disadvantages of using sound to attract mate: predators & parasitoids can hear you, when male calling female, cheaters called satellite males can exploit your efforts. If satellite males caught, territorial males will cause damage. Female choice = powerful component of sexual selection.
