Many animals defences are only used when in danger so many are equipped with tools to make them aware of dangers (vigilance: adaptations for scanning, they use theirs: Ears (auditory: many animals have large ears. Large ears are good to magnify sounds. Ears are called pinnae: but beavers have small ears. They have smaller ears because they swim.
