BIOL 1902 Lecture Notes - Lecture 22: Hitchhiking, Umbel, Tiarella
Document Summary
Pseudopollen (fake pollen) insect flies in looking for food and comes in contact with the sexual parts: grass of parnassus uses pssudonectaries (fake nectar) Queen anne"s lace uses decoys to lure in pollinators. Other flowers use different methods to pollinate (more active methods) Milkweed has clamping saddlebags of pollen so if an insects leg goes in it clamps down and attaches a saddlebag. White water lily is female first: a sweet liquid attracts flies and beetles and the flower closes overnight trapping the guests while it changes sex. Grass pink uses pseudopollen and fake stamen to lure: the flower has a hinged petal and a winged coffin with sex organs, the petal collapse trapping the bee and pulls pollen off of it as it escapes. Laurels have bashing stamens: when an insect goes in the stamen bash it to get the pollen.
