Getting progeny off to a good start in life: Parental care in animals: in the care of parents until ready to start own life. Armour = hard seed coats (physical protection: e. g. Seeds can be protected chemically: unripe berries protected w/ bitter terpenoids, aposematic colouration, young cones full of risen (terpenoids, milkweed seeds well protected by pod full of cardiac glycosides (terpenoids) Plants in open, sunny habitats, such as old fields, often use the wind: wind dispersal called anemochory, e. g. No solution = perfect; drawback of wind: too much wind, missing target habitat, such as water. Each fireweed flower produces 70 000 100 000 seeds. Hooks & barbs catch on hair feathers: seeds hitch-hike; stick-tight. Dispersal via animals = zoochory (can happen on inside or outside of animals. E. g. bears feed on blueberries seeds come out of droppings. Seed dispersers: waxwings exploited as seed dispersers. Chipmunks they want hard, inside of berry.
