BIOL 2001 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Centipede, Trilobite, Subphylum
Document Summary
Arthropods are triploblastic (they have three germ layers) and are coelomate organisms. They have a hardened exoskeleton containing cuticle and sclerotized protein. They have sophisticated respiratory and renal systems. they undergo metamerism with segments fused into functional groups called tagmata. Have two pairs of antennae, 8 or more legs. Have three pairs of legs, 2 pairs of wings and 1 pair of antennae. They have a pair of appendages in front of the mouth called chelicerae (a synapomorphy) that may contain or be connected to venom glands. Mostly have narrow guts and cannot eat solid food so they grind food before eating it. They are mostly predators but also can be external parasites. They can be either be air or water breathing. Have 18 or more legs (up to 750) and 1 pair of antennae. They are mostly detritivores (consume decaying material) however some like centipedes are predators (generally nocturnal).
