Gl-sl fr lies on ottawa-sl lowland & gl lowland. Alvars particularly plentiful in northern part of gl lowland. Largest # of alvars in ontario found on bruce peninsula & manitoulin island. Bruce peninsula: bruce = home to many calciphilic plants like poison ivy, fringed gentians grow on bruce alvars, as do ram"s-head lady"s-slippers, bruce alvars = home to many globally rare plants. Lakeside daisy only found in gl alvars (logo of natural heritage. Both are great lakes endemic plants e. g. hill"s thistle: coastal sand dunes w/ maritime plants e. g. beach pea, unlike other parts of gl-sl lowland, there are many fens here (50 species) Fern (extremely rare specialty : many northern plants grow here, subarctic disjuncts, such as butterwort grow here, 44 species of orchids e. g. , yellow lady"s-slipper, showy lady"s-slipper, Calypso (1 of bruce"s specialties ), alaska rein orchid (glacial relict disjunct: remarkable diversity of plants gives rise to title: the garden of northern.
