Lecture 22: natural history (presqu"ile park & bruce peninsula) Presqu"ile park: it was once separated from an island (long/narrow piece of land). Most of presqu"ile is a tombolo (a former island that becomes joined to the mainland by a spit of land). The currents of water joined sand between the two pieces of land. *** has white and red cedars that grow in a way where the bottom is skinny and the top is wide (this is caused by white-tailed deer eating the leaves). When white-tailed deer get in large numbers in small areas they can have devastating affects. White-tailed deer have become so common that deer culls now take place (killing them to reduce their numbers they have no predators on this island resulting in numbers escalating). Cross foxes: are found in the park, they are darker in coloration then a typical red. Bobcat: sightings have increased in the belleville napanee area, as in rainy river area.
