Document Summary
Tundra: plants & animals - natural history of ontario (lecture 4) Sphagnum moss creates its own soil, colonizing wet areas. The habitat sphagnum moss forms is called peat land. Peat is the dead part of sphagnum moss. There are dryer areas of the tundra; lichen plateaus (lichen fields), the lichens here are different. Reindeer lichen is found in ontario, woodland caribou move to the tundra to feed on this lichen. Woodland caribou have been called :lichen burners because of their fondness of lichens. Caribou migrate from the hudson bay lowland and boreal forest to the tundra in late spring. In caribou both males and females grow antlers; however the females are much smaller. Woodland caribou adaptations: their hoofs have a wide surface area acting like snow shoes. They grow hairs between their toes, they are also shaped like shovels so they can dig in the ground. They are also the largest herbivore in the tundra zone.
