Document Summary
Coopers hawks and sharp shinned hawks are accipiters. White throated sparrows: lives within the boreal forest and comes in 2 different color forms; white stripe and tan stripe form. This is unusual in birds, because the morphs occur in the same areas and the pairs of males and females have one of each morph. This is because the white stripe morph is more aggressive, the tan stripe form is better at caring for young. This presents a better parental combination for rearing high fitness offspring. They also respond to spruce budworm numbers; increasing in numbers with more budworms. The budworms are incased in pupa cases during winter, in the ground. They also provide food for mammals such as shrews. Bark beetles: when trees die, other animals benefit. Bark beetles eat the wood, when trees are dying (chemical defenses are lessened).
